My PC memory is full. Can I transfer itunes from my hard drive to an external memory & sinc directly to iPod?

PC memory is full & need to free up space - too much music! Can I use a large external memory and leave it connected to my PC and transfer all my iTunes to it, and then access my music directly to the external memory and sinc my iPod with it? How would I do this if possible?

You have to get rid of some stuff, or install an external form of memory.
